How Running Helped This Dancer Find the Strength to Come Out to Her Family

Multimarathoner and run-club member Maggie Wade hasn’t always felt as strong and as confident as she does now. While Maggie’s been a dancer her entire life, it was running that finally made her feel comfortable in her own skin and proud of who she is.

Joining a run club in LA reminded her that she’s not alone in any struggle. Not only did she find support on and off the pavement, but she also found lifelong friends — and the strength to show the world her true colors. “Running helped me get through the hardest part of my life, which was coming to terms with myself being part of the LGBTQ+ community,” she said.

Maggie has since come out to her parents and friends, proudly crediting her run journey with helping shape who she is today. Watch the video to see Maggie in action, and hear how running has given her a sense of belonging.

Sometimes finding the right people can help us find ourselves. We’ve partnered with HOKA ONE ONE® to show how one marathoner discovered community and fitness through running.
