USA Weightlifting Nationals Results

Over 1,400 athletes from across the U.S. gathered in Detroit, Michigan, during the week to take part in the 2021 USA Weightlifting National Championships, but now the chalk has settled and the plates have been re-racked.

Competitors set plenty of personal records across the Youth, Junior, Under-25, and Open categories, as well as a handful of American records. Several of the members of the promising USA Olympic weightlifting team also competed, leaving little doubt that the team has more potential to compete on the world stage than any in recent memory.

You can see highlights from each of the days of competition here. If you’re looking for results for a specific weight class or lifter, USA Weightlifting has released the final results on their event page.

Mattie Rogers Named Best Women’s Lifter

Rogers, a standout member of the Olympic women’s team, competed over the weekend on a whim in what she labeled on Instagram as a “nice lil Tokyo tune-up meet.” She and some of the other member of the team used the meet as a way to test opener-level weights for the Games, and Rogers took top honors in the process.

Weighing in at 78.6 kg, Rogers competed in the 81-kg division—a class lower than she’ll be competing in Tokyo. She set records for both lifts and the total, and showed the world that she has potential to contend for a medal in Tokyo.

Harrison Maurus Named Best Male Lifter

The men’s Best Lifter award went to another Olympian and Rogers’ fellow 81-kg competitor, Harrison Maurus, who is showing immense potential to compete on the world stage. He cruised to the title, going five for six, and topping his weight class by a whopping 31 kg with a 350-kg total.

  • Snatch: 155 kg (341 lbs.)
  • Clean and Jerk: 195 kg (429 lbs.)
  • Total: 350 kg (771 lbs.)

Maurus’ heavy clean and jerk looked especially easy, showing he has plenty of potential to go heavier in Tokyo later this month.

The Best Lifter is determined by the Sinclair Formula, an equation used to determine the best athlete across age and weight classes. Maurus’ score of 426.185 gave him a victory by over 16 points. In other words, he left no doubt.

US Olympic Team Honored Before Tokyo

There was a break in the action during the final day of competition so the fans and officials could honor the members of the USA Weightlifting Team. Five of the eight athletes competed at Nationals, all cruising to victory in their weight classes. All team members except Wes Kitts were able to be present for the ceremony.

This would be the athletes’ final public appearance before the Olympics. Each member was presented a metal plaque and roses during the send-off ceremony.

Power and Grace Performance & Florida Elite Win National Team Championship

In addition to individual competitions, a handful of teams pitted their lineups against one another at the championship. Each team included 10 athletes whose best lifts were added into a scoring system. The team with the most overall points at the end of the competition was the winner.

The winning female team was Georgia’s Power and Grace Performance, who clinched the victory with an overall score of 234 points, highlighted by Olympian Katherine Nye and 49-kg champ Cicely Kyle, who was featured in our USAW Nationals preview. They cruised to a 47-point win over second place team Philadelphia Barbell.

  • 2nd: Philadelphia Barbell, 180 points
